This cycling holiday in Austria and Italy, is ideal for those wishing to experience the beauty of the Alps in style
At times somewhat challenging, the riding is concentrated along the Via Claudia Augusta, a 2000 year old Roman built road which was for many centuries the main commercial route across the Alps. Originally used for the transportation of wine and olive oil from Spain, oysters from the Mediterranean and even spices from Asia, it now serves as the perfect biking route through an area of stunning views and historic sites.
The journey begins in Austria on the slopes of the mighty Zugspitze (2692m/8832ft) and takes in some of the most beautiful Tyrolean landscapes imaginable. From our first night's stay in Lermoos our journey heads off on a series of rolling forest trails and across undulating countryside trails, before heading upstream alongside the icy waters of the River Inn.
Crossing the border into Italy via the Reschen Pass, the panoramic views open up as we roll gently down into the Vinschgau Valley and South Tyrol. The ride continues via apple plantations, vineyards and historic castles and of course we'll take time during our meals to sample the food and wines for which the region is famous.
As the week draws to a close we'll enter the Etsch valley which leads us straight into the bustling city of Trento, where we can spend an afternoon soaking up the trendy Italian atmosphere in the numerous gelaterias and capuccino bars. We'll save some energy for the last day of riding through the Sarca Valley and onward to our final destination, Lake Garda, a grand finale to our Via Claudia adventure.
Highlights
- Waking up to beautiful views of the Zugspitze, Germany’s highest peak
- Cycling beside the vivid blue waters of the River Inn
- Absorbing the history of an ancient trade route by bike
- Exploring Merano – The Jewel of South Tyrol
- Winding your way through the lovely Vinschgau Valley
- A post-ride, tasty gelato on the shores of Lake Garda
Designed to retrace the steps of the ancient Roman route across the Alps, most of the Via Claudia follows quiet cycle paths and country lanes. The paths run along Alpine valleys, alongside rivers and apple plantations.
There are three important passes to cross, which will require a bit more effort than the rest of the route. Fernpass, has some off-road forest tracks with moderate climbs.

The Iron Curtain Tour route weaves its way south through Western Europe and what was once part of the Soviet Union - ride it all or either of two stages
Cycle through European History
This epic Central Europe bike trip includes 5 capitals and 5 distinct cultures connected through a historic period that changed the world. It begins in Berlin where the breaking down of the Wall heralded the collapse of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War. The route travels back and forth from east to west, crossing the Iron Curtain — the divide between communism and democratic capitalism, between the Soviet Union with its oppressive Red Army and the West and its allied states. The history on this tour is still palpable and unlike our other historic epic adventures, is still remembered by many of us. Take it on as a full Epic over 18 days or break it down into two parts – Berlin to Prague over 7 days or Prague to Budapest over 12 days.
Highlights
- Berlin Wall and its Checkpoint Charlie, which served as a symbol of the Iron Curtain as a whole.
- Connect 5 fascinating European capitals by bike, each with their own culture and unique cuisine.
- Cycle along the rivers and canals that thread their way through the forests that cover much of Eastern Germany.
- Follow the Oder-Neisse River along the Polish border to Görlitz, one of Germany’s most beautiful cities.
- Roll through the castle and fortress filled Czech Middle Mountains along the banks of the Elbe River.
- A rest day in Prague, a city that rivals Paris with its beauty and 1000-year history.
- The Renaissance town of Telč, a jewel of the Czech Republic and inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
- Sampling the world’s best beers, where almost every town has its own brewery; German wheat beers, Czech Pilsner, Austrian Lager and Hungarian ales.
- The now quiet and abandoned cold war fortifications and watchtowers that dot our route as we cross the former Iron Curtain.
- A rest day in beautiful Vienna recognised as a UNESCO world heritage site and often described as an open-air museum.
- Cycle along the Danube Bend region, one of its most scenic, where it enters steep hills, creating stunning meanders with quaint villages hugging its banks.
- Finish in Budapest, an architectural and historical treasure trove, majestically laid out along the Danube.

The Samurai Tour travels through three distinct parts of Japan and immerses us in its spectacular history, culture and landscape.
The Honshu Stage explores the enchanting Noto Peninsula and the Japanese Alps. The Shikoku Stage takes us across the smallest of Japan’s main islands to truly discover the road less travelled. The Mt Fuji Stage travels across Japan through the Alps, around Mt Fuji, to the shores of the Pacific.
Our routes follow ancient and meandering roads, which tend to be smooth, narrow and with very little traffic. The Honshu (the main island) stages offer a smorgasbord of culture and history, from castles and classic gardens to landscapes and towns left mostly unchanged for over 400 years. The Noto & Izu peninsulas evoke the ancient Samurai warriors of days gone by. The Japanese Alps, with its heavy winter snowfalls, prevented some villages from modernising are frozen in time. These living ancient villages are now UNESCO protected and allow us to see how life was lived for hundreds of years and the architecture that made life in such a challenging environment not only possible but highly productive and comfortable.
Kyoto, famous for its temples and garden, is where we spend our rest day between the Honshu and Shikoku Tour. On the Shikoku Island stage, we will cycle through the magnificent Iya Gorge and tackle Mt Ishizuchi, Western Japan’s highest peak at 1982m (6503ft). Enjoy thrilling descents, pass terraced rice paddies, traditional thatched-roof houses, and ancient villages clinging to the mountainsides.
The tour culminates with the spectacular Shimanami Kaido, a series of suspension bridges that connect small islands, offering stunning views of the inland sea and linking Shikoku back to Honshu.
Shikoku is also famous for its pilgrimage of the 88 temples associated with the Buddhist priest Kuka, known as Kobo-Daishi. Modern-day pilgrims, called ‘Henro’ by the locals, still tackle the 1200-kilometre route, many of them sporting traditional white clothing, sedge hats and kongō-zue walking sticks.
Throughout the tour, you’ll stay in a mix of Western-style hotels and traditional Japanese Inns, known as Ryokans. These mountain inns may be different from what you’re used to, with rice-straw mat floors and futon beds, but their charm and authenticity are unparalleled. Most of them also have natural hot spring baths, perfect for relaxing your muscles after a day of exhilarating cycling.
Highlights
- Explore the ancient Samurai roads and learn about this fascinating period in history.
- Indulge yourself in the natural hot springs offered by most of our accommodations.
- Discover the unique tastes of Japanese cuisine that are distinct and varied across the islands.
- Experience the delights of Japanese style inns that offer a very different hotel experience to what you might be used to.
The new Bonus Stage – Mt Fuji – Across Japan can be added to extend this tour to be a 3-stage 37-day Epic!

From the moment you arrive in Murwillumbah and the Tweed Valley you realise this is a special place.
In a landscape where the ocean shores rise to the verdant ranges and the worlds largest expanse of sub tropical rainforest, the natural beauty of this region is breathtaking. The whole Tweed Valley was formed by an extinct volcano leaving behind a caldera. Right in the very centre of this timeless landscape sits Wollumbin (Mt Warning), the vent of this ancient volcano. Wollumbin stands like a sentry over the region and is a defining landmark that can be viewed from almost every location in the Tweed. Interestingly, the first rays of morning light on the Australian mainland are cast on the peak of Wollumbin, and as you may expect, this towering peak at almost 1200 metres is held with due reverence by the Bundjalung Indigenous people. This cycle journey combines the timeless majesty of the Tweed Valley and Tweed Coast with Wollumbin and sections of the new and much acclaimed Northern Rivers Rail Trail. Beginning with a full circuit around Wollumbin, cycle along rural roads with sweeping landscapes and the dramatic backdrop of ranges that border the valley, then forest trails through the rainforest of National Parks, to follow rivers and creeks as you loop back to Murwillumbah. The second part of this cycle journey heads out along the Northern Rivers Rail Trail before turning east to the Tweed Coast and the sparkling beaches and coastline for which this region is renowned where you'll spend the night in premium accommodation by the beach. The last stage takes you back into Murwillumbah through the red soil farmlands of the Cudgen Plateau and the floodplains of the Tweed River which still supports significant cane farming operations. This is a cycle journey with breadth and depth from rainforest to superb beaches, dramatic landscapes carved in ancient times as well as a contemporary and colourful community that seems to thrive surrounded by nature's best. During this journey you will be supported with e-bike rental and luggage transfers between towns, giving you the freedom to cycle at a relaxed pace and take in the ever-changing landscape.
