Après Vélo
Live the Ride
Après Vélo is an Australian cycling tour operator and lifestyle brand built around "a collection of cycling tours each infused with a distinctive twist." Founded and run by Leonard Greis, who has spent more than 20 years building a business that blends fashion with cycling and adventure travel, Après Vélo describes itself as "100% self-made, self-funded and self-sufficient." Their tours are fully supported multi-day experiences pitched as much on lifestyle and local culture as on the riding itself, sold alongside a companion line of men's and women's cycling apparel and lifestyle gear.
The operation is anchored in Tasmania, where Hobart is treated by local tourism directories as their home base, and the Tasmanian programme is their deepest: road and gravel routes covering the island end to end, from the flagship Tour de Tasmania and the more relaxed Chilled Tassie Grupetto to dedicated gravel adventures on the east coast and between Launceston and Hobart, plus half-day rides around Hobart itself. On the mainland they run a Sunshine Coast tour in Queensland.
Beyond Australia, Après Vélo runs international road and gravel trips through Japan, Slovenia (with separate road and gravel itineraries through Slovenia, Italy and Croatia), South Africa (Cape to Safari), Morocco, Mallorca, and Italy's Dolomites via the Maratona dles Dolomites event tour. They also take bespoke custom tour enquiries for groups wanting a tailored itinerary.

Tour Operator Après Vélo
A gravel adventure through Europe's hidden cycling frontier, crossing Slovenia, Italy and Croatia.
The Slovenia Gravel Adventure takes riders beyond Europe's familiar cycling routes and into a landscape that shifts daily: crystal-clear Alpine lakes, forest-covered mountain plateaus, vineyard valleys, ancient villages and the sparkling Adriatic coastline. Created with Après Vélo's trusted local Slovenia partners, the route runs from the historic capital of Ljubljana through the Julian Alps and Triglav National Park, the wine region of Goriška Brda, the Karst plateau and on to the coast, weaving between Slovenia, Italy and Croatia along the way.
Over seven riding days, expect wide open gravel roads, quiet forests, flowing climbs and constantly changing scenery. Around 60–65% of riding is on gravel, described as smooth "champagne gravel" rather than technical or rocky terrain, with the remainder on quiet sealed roads connecting the most scenic sections. A scenic train ride through the Bohinj Tunnel carries riders from the Julian Alps into the emerald Soča Valley, while a rest day at Lake Bohinj and an evening watching the Lipizzaner horses released at Lipica add texture beyond the riding itself.
Experienced local ride partners lead throughout, drawing on intimate knowledge of quiet roads, hidden valleys and viewpoints most visitors never find. Handpicked accommodation, incredible local food and wine, full support and a considered balance between riding and relaxation round out the experience. Non-riding partners are welcomed and included in all meals and activities. An optional extension allows riders to extend into Croatian Istria or take a day trip to Venice before the tour concludes on the Adriatic coast at Piran.
Highlights:
- Ride from Ljubljana through the Julian Alps to Lake Bohinj, Slovenia's largest Alpine lake
- Explore Triglav National Park's Pokljuka Plateau and alpine pastures
- Scenic train transfer through the Bohinj Tunnel into the emerald Soča Valley
- Wine country riding through Goriška Brda ("the Tuscany of Slovenia") and the Karst region
- Watch the Lipizzaner horses released at Lipica Stud Farm before finishing on the Adriatic coast
- Cross into Croatian Istria to the medieval hilltop village of Grožnjan
Surface and terrain:
Around 60–65% gravel (wide, flowing forest tracks and rural backroads, described as "champagne gravel" rather than technical), remainder on quiet sealed roads. Alpine climbing throughout, including a 1,350m day; not a technical or race-style gravel tour.
Likely weather:
Slovenia's most rewarding cycling season is described generally as late spring through summer into early autumn.
Suitable for:
Riders comfortable with 60–80km days and regular climbing at a moderate pace; not aimed at beginners, but no technical gravel experience required. Difficulty rated 3.5/5.

This immersive experience blends cultural discovery with the quiet power of the open road and is designed for riders who seek meaning as much as movement.
Our Shogun Ride from Nasu–Nikko is a fully supported journey by bike through the cultural heart of old-world Japan, where every turn of the pedals traces the path of Japan’s legendary Shoguns. Think cedar-lined mountain roads, landscapes shaped by centuries of tradition, steaming onsen hot springs to soothe tired legs, sacred shrines, immaculate countryside and a rhythm of life that feels beautifully removed from the rush of modernity. This is where Samurai history meets volcanic landscapes and where every ride includes something unexpected…perhaps matcha in a centuries-old garden, handmade chocolate in a mountain village, or cheesecake at altitude.
This is more than a ride – it is a passage through centuries of history, culture, landscapes and beauty, curated the Après Vélo way.
Non-riding partners are part of the journey and encouraged to attend this bucket list experience.
Japan doesn’t reveal itself all at once. It unfolds — quietly, gracefully — as you ride.
This fully supported road cycling tour is beautifully balanced 70–85km per day with meaningful elevation — challenging enough to feel earned yet designed so you return each afternoon with time to soak, wander, and absorb Japan at a slower rhythm.
We stay in traditional onsen ryokans and carefully selected boutique properties. We ride quiet countryside roads, forest passes, sacred mountain climbs, balanced with serene descents and soul-filling scenery. We experience culture not as tourists — but as welcomed guests.
Off the bike, the immersion deepens. Kaiseki dining. Guided hikes. Pottery making. Local sake tasting. Tatami rooms. UNESCO-listed shrines. Impeccable hospitality and cultural immersion that lingers long after the final pedal stroke.
At heart, we’re devoted food lovers — and Japan is a culinary revelation.
Each region we ride through tells its story at the table: pristine seafood pulled from nearby waters, mountain vegetables harvested at their seasonal peak, delicate fruits, regional specialties you won’t find outside their prefecture, and beautifully crafted local sake for those inclined.
Even if you’re well acquainted with Japanese cuisine, prepare to be surprised. The depth, precision and regional diversity we experience on tour goes far beyond the familiar — this is Japan’s food culture, experienced intimately and authentically.
This is Japan through the lens of Après Vélo — considered, immersive, beautifully paced.
