Japan: the Shogun Ride from Nasu-Nikko

The Shogun Ride from Nasu–Nikko is a fully supported journey through the cultural heart of old-world Japan, where cedar-lined mountain roads, volcanic landscapes, steaming onsen and sacred shrines set the pace. Riding is balanced at 70–85km per day with meaningful elevation, challenging enough to feel earned while leaving afternoons free to soak, wander and absorb Japan's slower rhythm.

The route runs from the mountain retreat of Nasu, through farmland loops and gourmet mountain climbs, across the iconic Iroha-zaka switchbacks to Lake Chuzenji, and on through the UNESCO-listed shrines and cedar forests of Nikko. A rest day allows a guided temple walk and Goma fire ritual, before the route continues via the ancient Nikko Cedar Avenue to rural Bato and Ashino, finishing with a cultural loop through tea plantations, gardens and castle grounds.

Accommodation is a mix of traditional onsen ryokans and carefully selected boutique properties. Off the bike, the immersion deepens further with kaiseki dining, guided hikes, pottery-making, sake tasting and artisan workshops — food and culture woven through every day as much as the riding itself.

Non-riding partners are warmly welcomed and travel with the support vehicle, with select experiences curated exclusively for them, including washi paper-making and pottery sessions. An optional two-night Tokyo extension is available at tour's end for those wanting a final change of pace before heading home.
