A 12-day women-only e-bike journey along Japan's Shimanami Kaido, linking island bridges, onsens and local culture, finishing with the Cycling Shimanami 2026 mass-participation ride.
The Shimanami Experience is a 12-day women-only e-bike tour along Japan's Shimanami Kaido, linking island bridges across the Seto Inland Sea. Starting and finishing in Onomichi, the route crosses citrus groves, quiet fishing villages and dramatic suspension bridges, including the record-length Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge.
Cultural stops include shrines, an onsen soak on several nights, a samurai armour museum, and a free day to explore Matsuyama Castle or Dogo Onsen, Japan's oldest hot spring bathhouse. The tour builds to the Cycling Shimanami 2026 event, a mass-participation ride with closed roads and cheering crowds along the route.
Riding is on Specialized Vado SL e-bikes, with limited SAG support and bilingual female guides throughout. Several days include optional detours, such as Rabbit Island (Okunoshima) or extra island loops, letting riders tailor each day's distance to their energy levels.
Highlights:
- Cross Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge, Japan's longest suspension bridge, and Tatara Bridge on the Shimanami Kaido
- Optional climb to the Shiratakiyama viewpoint, lined with hundreds of stone kami statues
- Visit Oyamazumi Shrine and its samurai armour museum, with an optional side-trip to Rabbit Island
- Soak in onsens along the route, including a stay near Dogo Onsen, Japan's oldest hot spring bathhouse
- Ride the Cycling Shimanami 2026 event, a 44-mile closed-road group ride with live crowd support
- Free time to explore Matsuyama Castle, citrus groves, fishing villages and local sweets stops (daifuku, yuzu gelato)
