The first section of the Tour d’Afrique starts at the legendary Pyramids of Giza
The riders will then pedal across the Eastern desert and along the shores of the Red Sea; stopping for their first rest day in the coastal city of Safaga, known for its amazing scuba diving. They will then face a challenging climb westward towards the Nile River, experiencing the transformation from a stark desert landscape to the bustling, green and vibrant life along the banks of the Nile. Now the riders will weave along roads lined with curious children and full of donkey carts carrying baskets of sugar cane, cars, motorbikes, chickens, goats, and more.
A rest day in Luxor provides the opportunity to explore some magnificent archaeological sites including the Temple of Karnak and the Valleys of the Kings and Queens. The route continues south along the banks of the mother Nile to another rest day in Aswan, the gateway to the legendary region of Nubia. Here the riders can learn about Egypt’s famous Aswan Dam and enjoy a gin and tonic overlooking the river before heading out to the desolate fringes of the Sahara Desert. A long stage takes them to Abu Simbel, home to the famed rock-cut temples built by Ramses II that were saved and relocated here when the Aswan Dam flooded the river valley. This majestic setting marks the end of this historic section.
