Beginning in Windhoek, this section of the Tour d'Afrique is challenging but incredibly rewarding.
The riders will cycle southwest on dirt and sand roads, across the central Namibian plateau and then over the scenic Spreetshoogte Pass and down into the Namib desert, a vast moonscape of endless horizons and boundless blue skies. The cyclists will sample some of the world’s best apple pie in the aptly named settlement of Solitaire before exploring the world’s largest sand dunes at Sossusvlei, an incredible otherworldly experience. Departing the dunes, the route turns south and traverses harshly beautiful and thinly populated lands, with the possibility of seeing zebras, giraffes and other wildlife.
The scenic Senqu (Orange) River marks the border crossing into South Africa. Few countries can match South Africa’s natural beauty and wealth. Spinning along the quiet highways of Northern Cape Province takes the riders across the heather strewn hillsides of Namaqualand and past picturesque vineyards towards the Atlantic Ocean. Along the country’s west coast the cyclists will tackle the last short stretch of off road corrugation and revel in the ruggedness of the coast and its cool, foggy conditions. Soon the riders reach the cosmopolitan city of Cape Town, spectacularly situated in the shadow of iconic Table Mountain.
