A 6-day ride exploring Wyoming beyond its famous parks, crossing open ranchlands, small towns and wide western valleys.
Western Wyoming is often known for its famous national parks, but this six-day tour explores a quieter side of the state. From Jackson Hole, riders climb over Togwotee Pass and past Brooks Lake before dropping into Dubois, a cowboy town home to the Bighorn Sheep Center.
The route then follows the Wind River Valley into Lander, a hub for outdoor recreation, before passing through the historic ghost towns of Atlantic City and South Pass City on the way to Farson, famous for its Mercantile ice cream. The final riding day takes in views over Fremont Lake and the Green River Valley near Pinedale.
Overnights are spent in a mix of historic hotels and remote lodges, with regional dinners featuring trout, barbecue, steak and local beef, before the tour finishes back in Jackson.
Highlights
- Togwotee Pass and Brooks Lake
- Dubois's Western heritage and Bighorn Sheep Center
- Wind River Valley cycling into Lander
- Historic ghost towns of Atlantic City and South Pass City
- Farson Mercantile's famous ice cream and views from Pinedale over Fremont Lake and the Green River Valley
Surface and terrain:
Riding is on paved highways, some with shoulders, with generally light traffic. The route passes through open country, sagebrush hills, ranch country and river valleys, with "small climbs rather than long sustained mountain ascents." The more significant climbs, near Togwotee Pass and South Pass, are partially shuttled. Daily distances range from 38 to 74 miles (61-119 km).
Weather:
Fall in Wyoming is typically cool, clear and well suited to riding. Mornings can be chilly enough for tights and arm warmers, though many days warm up enough for short sleeves by lunchtime. Layering is recommended.
Suitable for:
Riders comfortable with a "moderate" difficulty tour, covering varying terrain and some climbing, without extreme technical demands.
