A demanding ride across Bhutan from east to west, crossing high Himalayan passes and remote valleys, with monasteries, village life and long mountain descents.

Twelve days of high-altitude cycling cross Bhutan from east to west, climbing through forests of pine, fir and rhododendron to high Himalayan passes strung with prayer flags, before long descents unwind toward the next valley. The journey opens with a hike to the cliffside Tiger's Nest Monastery above Paro and a day exploring Thimphu, before a spectacular flight east to Trashigang for a short warm-up ride through traditional eastern architecture and colourful chortens.

From Trashigang, riders climb over the Korila Pass (2,450m) to Mongar, then tackle Thrumshing La, one of Bhutan's highest road passes, en route to the village of Ura. The route continues over Sheytang La (3,450m) with views toward Gangkhar Puensum, Bhutan's highest mountain, to Bumthang, where a full day on foot explores the valley's sacred Jambay, Kurjey and Tamzhing temples and Yathra weaving villages.

From Bumthang the road climbs Yotong La (3,400m) to Trongsa, then over Pele La and Lawala passes (3,300m and 3,400m) to the black-necked crane valley of Gangtey Goenpa, before descending to Punakha and finally crossing Dochula Pass (3,100m) into Thimphu. Riders spend nights in carefully selected luxury lodges and boutique resorts throughout, supported by bilingual local guides, a leapfrogging support van, and multi-course dinners of Bhutanese, Indian and international dishes, with the Bhutan visa arranged and included.

Highlights: Tiger's Nest Monastery (Paro Taktsang) hike above Paro Korila, Thrumshing La and Sheytang La passes, with views toward Gangkhar Puensum Sacred Bumthang temples (Jambay, Kurjey, Tamzhing Lhakhang) and Yathra weaving villages Pele La and Lawala passes to the black-necked crane valley of Gangtey Goenpa Dochula Pass descent into Thimphu, past traditional dzong fortress-monasteries

Surface and terrain:
Paved two-lane roads with light traffic; surface can be coarse in places, so wider tyres are used. Long climbs at 4-6% grades over several high Himalayan passes up to 3,450m, with a support van available if riders want a lift. Daily distances 55-100 km across 7 confirmed riding days.

Weather:
Mountain weather is changeable, sometimes clear, drizzly and dry within one day, so layers are important. Bhutan's subtropical setting keeps spring and fall routes mostly free of snow. Season runs March to November.

Suitable for:
Experienced, fit riders comfortable with sustained high-altitude climbing, long mountain passes and variable weather, wanting an immersive cultural and monastery-focused Himalayan crossing rather than an easy ride.
