The Catlins Coast tour will take you from Dunedin to Invercargill via Bluff.
The Catlins is wild, stormy and remote, lesser explored regions of New Zealand. You will cycle along the edge of sandy beaches, around charming bays and between rocky peninsulas.
Highlights
Your journey then weaves in and out of bays and headlands, through forest and farmland, between small settlements and secluded towns. The main route through the Catlins called “The Southern Scenic Highway” is now sealed, but to experience the full flavour of this region, it is recommended to take the side tours on some winding, hilly, gravel roads.
The Catlins delightful secret is an array of interesting wildlife, vegetation and history to be explored amongst rugged coastal landscapes. You will cycle along the edge of sandy beaches, around charming bays and between rocky peninsulas, visiting isolated light houses, cascading waterfalls, petrified forests and large caves, you can expect to see penguins, seals, sea lions and dolphins, it is indeed a nature lovers dream.
The remote nature of this tour means it is suitable for fit riders with cycle touring experience, an ability to ride 5-8 hours per day with significant climbing on gravel roads. You will need to be self sufficient by carrying food and water as there is significant distance between towns, and you will need basic bike maintenance skills to repair your own punctures
