La Rioja - The Descent of the River Ebro

This tour follows the River Ebro, the longest in Spain, from its source in the Cantabrian Mountains down to the vineyards of La Rioja. After a transfer to Campoo, riders pass green mountain pastures, the Ebro Reservoir and the Monastery of Montesclaros before reaching Polientes, with a longer option circumnavigating the reservoir.

The route continues through the open Valderredible valley, past Romanesque and rock-carved churches, into a deepening canyon where eagles and vultures soar overhead, and the fairytale village of Orbaneja del Castillo. Further on, a huge river bend leads to Medina de Pomar's old Jewish quarter, with an optional detour to the rock-bridge village of Puentedey, then on to the castle village of Frías.

The final stages pass through more dramatic canyons and reservoir shores to reach Haro and the walled medieval village of Laguardia, both at the heart of Rioja wine country.

Surface and terrain:
Generally easy to intermediate cycling following the Ebro downstream, rated "average intermediate." Some climbing on days the route moves away from the river. Daily distances 25-62 km, with shorter/longer options on Days 2 and 7. Carbon road, trekking, e-road and e-hybrid bikes offered.

Suitable for:
Self-guided cyclists comfortable with intermediate terrain and occasional climbing away from the river, daily distances up to 62 km (shorter route options available on two days).
