A 1.5-hour magical evening city bike tour past the festival's light artworks

This 1.5-hour guided evening ride explores Amsterdam during one of its most atmospheric seasons, when the Amsterdam Light Festival fills the city with around 20 light artworks by local, national and international artists. Small groups follow a knowledgeable guide along the festival route, learning about the artworks and the ideas behind them.

The ride also takes in illuminated landmarks including Dam Square and the Royal Palace, the Anne Frank House, the Jordaan and the Skinny Bridge, with lights reflecting on the historic canals and detours through lesser-known alleys and courtyards.

Riders use well-lit 3-speed bikes and start with a hot chocolate or tea, with plenty of photo stops along the way. It's a relaxed, seasonal way to see the city after dark during the winter months.

Highlights

  • Around 20 light artworks along the Amsterdam Light Festival route
  • Dam Square and the Royal Palace by night
  • The Anne Frank House and the Jordaan
  • The illuminated Skinny Bridge (Magere Brug)
  • Lights reflecting on the historic Canal Belt
  • Hidden alleys and courtyards

Surface and terrain
Flat, sealed city streets, canal-side lanes and bridges through central Amsterdam, with some narrow alleys. Night riding in winter traffic, so basic confidence on a bike is needed.

Weather
Cold, damp winter evenings, typically around 0-7°C, with rain, wind and occasional frost likely. Dress warmly. Tours run rain or shine (ponchos supplied) but may be rescheduled in severe weather warnings.

Suitable for
Visitors in Amsterdam during the festival wanting an easy, atmospheric evening ride combining light art and landmarks. Riders should be comfortable cycling at night in traffic. Minimum age 12 on public tours.
