Cycling from Bordeaux vineyards to the ocean

This self-guided trip crosses the south of the Gironde, starting in the Entre-Deux-Mers and Sauternes vineyards on either side of the Garonne, home to famous estates such as Château Yquem. Riders pass the medieval town of Saint-Macaire and the château at Villandraut before entering the pine forests of the Landes de Gascogne Regional Nature Park.

The route continues through moorland and past the Hostens lakes to the Leyre river, then follows the coastal path through working oyster ports to Arcachon on the Atlantic. From here, riders can extend their stay with loop rides to the 107-metre Dune du Pilat or across the bay to Cap Ferret.

Accommodation is in charming hotels and bed and breakfasts throughout, with the route taking in small roads, cycle paths and the ornithological park at Le Teich along the way.

Surface and terrain:
Small sealed roads and cycle paths, mostly flat with one hillier day near Saint-Macaire (430m over 44km). Forest tracks through the Landes, then coastal path to Arcachon. A boat crossing links Arcachon to Cap Ferret.
