Through the Bernese domination
Over the centuries, the lords of the city of Bern gained power steadily and were able to extend their influence over large parts of the present-day midlands. The cities with Bernese domination suffered countless conflicts, but were fortunate to survive them largely unscathed. Today, some of the most beautiful cities in Switzerland can be found along the Alter Bernerweg or Old Bernese Path.
The towers of Payerne are visible to cyclists from afar, the mayor Niklaus Thut still watches over the old town in Zofingen and the castles of Lenzburg and Aarburg bear witness to the prosperity of the old empire. The Old Bernerweg is worth travelling, and not just for those interested in history. Idyllic natural spots such as the Kleinbösiger Auried, the Laupen Forest or the bird islands of the Aare enchant travellers on bikes anew every day.
