A seven-day, self-guided crossing of Switzerland's flat central plateau, from Lake Constance to Lake Geneva.

The Mittelland Route crosses Switzerland's central plateau from Romanshorn on Lake Constance to Lausanne on Lake Geneva, mostly on traffic-free paths through orchards, river valleys and lakeside towns. Early stages pass through the Thurgau hills and industrial Winterthur before reaching Zurich, then follow the Limmat and Aare through Baden and Olten.

Later stages take in baroque Solothurn, the Three Lakes region around Biel, and the medieval towns of Murten and Avenches, the former Roman capital of Helvetia. The final days cross the Broye Plain and the Rhone-Rhine watershed before finishing on the shores of Lake Geneva.

Highlights:

  • Rolling orchard country of the Thurgau and historic Winterthur
  • Riverside riding along the Limmat and Aare through Zurich and Baden
  • Baroque old town of Solothurn
  • The Three Lakes country around Biel and medieval Murten
  • Roman heritage at Avenches, former capital of Roman Helvetia
  • Finish along the shores of Lake Geneva into Lausanne

Surface and terrain:
Mostly flat, largely car-free riding on natural field and forest paths through the Swiss Mittelland; well suited to family cycling.

Suitable for:
Riders comfortable with an "easy" difficulty, multi-day tour on flat terrain; well suited to families with children.
