A nine-day, self-guided crossing of Switzerland's lake country, from Lake Geneva to Lake Constance.
The Lakes Route links Switzerland's best-known lakes on a self-guided ride from Vevey to Rorschach, opening in the Gruyère cheese region before passing through the chalet country of Gstaad and Saaneneland. A boat transfer carries riders from Spiez across Lake Thun to Interlaken, followed by a climb over the Brünig Pass into the pre-Alpine landscape of Obwalden.
The route then follows the shores of Lake Lucerne and Lake Zug to the pilgrimage town of Einsiedeln, before tracing Lake Zurich, Walensee and the Rhine Valley to a finish on Lake Constance at Rorschach.
Highlights:
- Cheese country around Gruyères and chalet villages near Gstaad
- Boat crossing from Spiez to Interlaken on Lake Thun (bike included)
- Brünig Pass and the pre-Alpine landscape of Obwalden
- Lakeside riding past Lucerne, Mount Pilatus and Lake Zug
- Pilgrimage site at Einsiedeln and the high moor near Rothenthurm
- Finish along Lake Walen's "Riviera" and the Rhine Valley to Lake Constance
Surface and terrain:
Predominantly smooth, flat lakeside riding, with several minor passes between lakes. Eurotrek recommend an e-bike for less athletic riders; touring bikes suit more athletic cyclists.
Suitable for:
Riders comfortable with a "moderate" difficulty, multi-day tour with occasional climbing; suitable for both leisure and more athletic cyclists depending on bike choice.
