From castle to castle
The Tarasp Castle proudly watches over the Lower Engadine and marks the start of your cycle tour through the canton of Graubünden just after Scuol. You cross the Inn valley and climb up to the Albula Pass. The painted facades of houses turn each stage town into a small work of art and you will pass stately churches and castle ruins time and again.
The castle of Hohen Rätien marks the turn to the valley of the Hinterrhein, where you cross the Viamala Gorge at the very beginning. You will pass by a fortress and not a castle in Sufers - a museum is still dedicated to its mighty defense system. The castles of Bellinzona and one of the most massive fortifications of the Middle Ages await you after a ride over the San Bernardino.
For the many passes and partly steep ascents and descents, good basic condition is required. On some pass roads you have to expect traffic at weekends. The Schinschlucht (tunnels and traffic) between Tiefencastel and Thusis can be bypassed by public transport or on the MTB-Route 90 (steep, unpaved).
