La Rioja is a broad valley of undulating vineyards and craggy hills, where walled hilltop towns reflect the turbulent times of earlier centuries. Our exploration on two wheels starts in the beautiful city of Burgos, the historic capital of Castile. Following the Via Verde cycle route, we continue into the heart of the Demanda mountain range and reach the fertile land of La Rioja. Surrounded by vineyards, we cycle across the gentle rolling countryside and taste the excellent wines and food produced in the region.

Extremadura is famous in Spain for its grazing lands and its medieval towns full of history from the time of the Conquest of America. This region South West of Madrid and next to Portugal is mostly a low and flat area with several important rivers runing through it so that is has mild winters and makes a perfect grazing land for Cattle and Sheep herds through the winter. The area is also famous for the historic cities where many of the Conquistadors came from. When men like Pizarro came back from the conquest they brought much wealth and cities such as Trujillo and Caceres are full of Palaces and churches thanks to the gold they brought back.

Our cycling tour in the Camino begins in the charming city of Leon , 332 km away from Santiago. We then cross the impressive open space of Castilian plains gradually climbing to the highest point of the trip, the "Iron Cross" (1.505 m) that has become one of the abiding symbols of the pilgrim way of St. James. Then we ride through fertile valleys full of vineyards in the Bierzo region and finally through the green countryside of rural Galicia before reaching Santiago de Compostela.

Southern Spain is an open bright land. Over the length and breadth of the rich geography are hidden away lovely towns, dream countryside, architectural jewels and countless picturesque places, worthy of praise for their beauty and immeasurable architectural heritage.

This route is designed to combine good cycling in varied landscapes in rural areas with stays in the most monumental cities and town of Andalucía. The cycling is easy since it is done on flat cycle lanes with hardly any climbing.

Andalusia is one of those privileged destinations that offer ideal weather conditions for cycle touring most of the year.
