Cycling, boating and hiking through Romania's most spectacular stretch of the Danube
Danube Gorges by Bike & Boat is a guided, vehicle-supported tour paying tribute to the most spectacular stretch of the Danube on the Romanian side, where the river carves through the Carpathians. The Danube Gorges reserve is about more than scenery: Bike in Time weave in the local communities, culture and traditions that make this border region so distinctive. Based in the riverside village of Eșelnița for most of the week, you unpack once and ride out each day.
Riding combines quiet asphalt along the river with gravel climbs into the Banat Mountains. You'll pass Mraconia Monastery and the giant "Dacian head" rock sculpture, climb to St Ana Monastery above Orșova for sweeping views, and descend to the decorated village of Toplet. One day is spent mostly off the bike, taking local boats to caves reachable only by water and the Roman Tabula Traiana, followed by a hike along the gorge ridge.
Later days lead to hidden villages where descendants of Czech miners still keep their traditions, and to the ruins of a medieval fortress. The final ride follows one of the wildest sections of the Danube from Svinița, with each rider choosing how far to go before the support vehicle takes over, ending at Cetate Cultural Harbour. Full board features regional delicacies including traditional fish dishes, and transfers to and from Bucharest are included, with a stop at Drobeta-Turnu Severin's Roman remains on the way in.
