Cycling offers a truly unique way to experience the dramatic peaks of the Warrumbungles, the dominant backdrop of this carefully planned route in north western NSW.
The name ‘Warrumbungle’ is a Gamilaroi word meaning crooked mountains. Created over millions of years from an extinct shield volcano, the jagged volcanic silhouette of the Warrumbungles rises sharply from eucalypt-dotted ridges amid surrounding plains. Free from artificial light, the Warrumbungle National Park is Australia's first Dark Sky Park and on clear nights you will encounter the starriest of skies. From different perspectives, and taking in the surrounding countryside and classic rural towns, the route criss crosses its way between the Warrumbungle National Park and the Pilliga to the north. In the Pilliga, the wide landscapes are swapped for forest trails which envelop you in a timeless region. This is Gamillaroi Country and the place name is derived from their language meaning 'swamp oaks'. This area is teaming in biodiversity and is home to the largest koala population in NSW west of the Great Dividing Range. The rock sculptures of the Pilliga are a highlight as are the little known forest trails alive with birdlife. At night, you'll stay in an eclectic combination of cabins and rural motels where you will experience real country hospitality.
- Revel in the independence of cycling and navigating the route, with a support vehicle as backup
- Experience a unique cycle route with the backdrop of the dramatic peaks of the Warrumbungles
- Discover the Pilliga rock sculptures
- Appreciate the timelessness of Gamilaroi Country
- Enjoy the camaraderie of the cycle with a group of like minded travellers

Woman's Edition Brisbane Valley and Kilkivan Rail Trail Combined Cycle Trip highlights
Cycle through classic Australian farming communities
Journey with cycle blogger Gail Rehbein on this women’s special edition cycle journey bringing two of Australia’s best rail trails, the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail, BVRT, and the Kingaroy Kilkivan Rail Trail, KKRT, together into one great trip. Gail brings many seasons of cycling and enthusiasm to her own style and approach to cycling. As a cycling blogger, abike4allseasons.com, she promotes the physical and mental wellbeing brought by cycling and a slower and reflective approach to bike riding. This is an approach where a slower journey is a fulfilling one with time to reflect on, engage with and appreciate the natural landscape and the people you meet along the way.
The BVRT KKRT combined women's cycle is an amazing cycle journey of over 300 kilometres. Although the ‘head’ of both rail lines came to the same region, these two lines never meet with the BVRT branching out from Wulkuraka near Ipswich and the other branching out from Gympie to the north of Brisbane. The steam locomotives along these lines have long gone, replaced by cyclists following the same path powered not by steam but pedal power. Through the dedication and hard work of locals keen to showcase these regions combined with a commitment to cycle tourism and rail trails more generally these two great rail trails stand as a benchmark for other communities with similar aspirations.
The cycling is on mixed surfaces of gravel, dirt and asphalt and is achievable for anyone of reasonable fitness and cycling ability. Along the route you'll pass through prime agricultural land, a rugged mountain range and forests of Blackbutt, Hoop Pine and Cedar as well as a range of classic Queensland towns with good coffee and local cafes. Travelling with your tour escort you’ll have plenty of opportunity soak up the atmosphere of rural Queensland and share your passion for cycling. With all your logistics taken care of including transfers, bike hire, luggage transfers and accommodation, all you need to do is enjoy the cycle day and take in the expansive scenery of this truly outstanding route.
Highlights
- Travel with Tour Escort and Cycle Blogger Gail Rehbein
- Enjoy the independence of self-guided cycling with all logistics taken care of for you
- Hassle-free cycling on the dedicated cycle path on the Brisbane Valley and Kilkivan Rail Trails
- Appreciate the views of rural Queensland with sweeping valleys and rugged mountains
- Sample beer and bakery treats along the route
- Visit historic towns and villages

Between Wulkuraka and Yarraman in southern Queensland is the remnants of the Brisbane Valley rail line, constructed over 29 years between 1884 and 1913
The steam locomotives have long gone, replaced by cyclists following the same path. The conversion of the rail line to a cycle trail took a little less time, about 11 years with completion in 2018, only possible through the dedication and hard work of locals keen to showcase this special region of Australia. At 161km (100mi) in length, the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail (BVRT) qualifies as the longest rail trail in the country. Our cycle tour starts at the top of the range, giving you an easy start downhill to the plains of the Brisbane Valley and back to Wulkuraka over three days. The cycling is on mixed surfaces of gravel, dirt and asphalt and is achievable for anyone of reasonable fitness and cycling ability. Along the route you'll pass through prime agricultural land, a rugged mountain range and forests of Blackbutt, Hoop Pine and Cedar. Stops at historical townships with good coffee and bakery items, interesting museums and friendly pubs are all part of the BVRT experience. At night, stay in comfortable accommodation and soak up the atmosphere of country Queensland towns. With all your logistics taken care of including transfers, bike hire, luggage transfers and accommodation bookings, all you need to do is enjoy the cycle day and take in the expansive scenery of this truly outstanding route.

The Top End fills people’s imagination with crocodiles, buffalo and barramundi and images of sweeping landscapes and flood plains. It is a location that excites the senses from the moment you arrive but it is also a place of amazing history. Kakadu is truly an ancient land with an environment surviving largely untouched and a culture that has endured and maintained cultural connections to country passed down through generations. It is this connection between both an ancient environment and a surviving and celebrated ancient culture that make this region truly worthy of dual World Heritage listing. Over 5 days we’ll ‘hike and bike’ to some of the best locations in the region, enjoying two nights at our private semi-permanent campsite in Kakadu with a million-star view and the crackle of a campfire. We’ll swim in remote rockpools, meet Indigenous guides who will share their connection to land then create some dust as we cycle down back roads and along some selected scenic roads. This is an amazing round trip of over one thousand kilometres travelling a round circuit south from Darwin then east to Kakadu before circling back west from the southern reaches of Kakadu to Litchfield National Park before returning to Darwin.
