This eight-day self-guided tour follows the Elbe Cycle Path from Hamburg to Magdeburg, passing through three nature reserves and numerous historic towns and villages. After exploring Hamburg, riders follow the riverbanks to Lauenburg, then into the Elbhöhen-Wendland Nature Park and its floodplains to Hitzacker, a haven for storks, sea eagles and cranes.
The route continues through village-lined riverbanks to Wittenberge, then against the current to Havelberg via the stork-rich village of Rühstädt, part of the UNESCO Elbe River Landscapes Biosphere Reserve. Riders continue to Tangermünde, with its historic Eulenturm and town hall, before a final stage past the Jerichow monastery and a major waterway intersection to Magdeburg, home to its landmark cathedral.
The tour can also be ridden in reverse (Magdeburg to Hamburg), and extended from Hamburg to the North Sea spa town of Cuxhaven.
