An eight-day e-bike circuit of Upolu, Samoa, combining village life, snorkelling and beach-fale stays.
Cycle Samoa circles the island of Upolu by e-bike, described by the operator as much more a cultural experience than a straight cycling trip. Riders pass through Samoan villages at a relaxed pace, taking in coastal roads, lava-tube trenches and rainforest scenery, with a rest day built in partway through.
Highlights along the route include a turtle kayaking experience through mangroves, snorkelling with giant clams at Savaia, a descent into the Sua Ocean Trench, and swims at Togitogiga Waterfalls. Nights are spent in a mix of motels, resorts and traditional beach fales, including two nights at Lalomanu, rated among the world's best beaches by Lonely Planet.
This is a women-only, fully guided tour, with e-bikes provided to keep the riding accessible while still requiring reasonable base fitness.
Highlights:
- Circumnavigate Upolu by e-bike, riding through coastal villages and rainforest
- Kayak with turtles through mangroves and a lagoon near Vai Villas
- Snorkel with giant clams at Savaia's Giant Clam Sanctuary
- Descend into Sua Ocean Trench, a collapsed lava tube with its own sea-water pool
- Swim at Togitogiga Waterfalls and explore lava tube caves near Tafatafa
- Rest day at Lalomanu Beach, with an optional side trip to Namua Island
Surface and terrain:
Riding is mostly on sealed coastal and village roads, gently undulating rather than flat. Two notable climbs feature: roughly 200m on Day 3 (with a partly unsealed descent) and around 400m on Day 8 near La Mafa Pass. E-bikes are used throughout to manage these sections. Daily distances are short, ranging from an 8km orientation ride up to 37km, and the operator describes the pace as "easy-paced." Total elevation gain is not stated on the page.
Weather:
September falls within Samoa's dry season (roughly May to October), so conditions are typically warm and humid with less rainfall than the wet season, and daytime temperatures generally in the high 20s to low 30s°C.
Suitable for:
Women seeking a moderate, culturally immersive cycling holiday rather than a high-mileage challenge. Riders "need to be bike fit," though e-bikes ease the climbs. Best suited to those drawn to village life, snorkelling and beach downtime alongside the riding.
