Wide Open Road Cycling Tours
Experience the wide open road
Wide Open Road Cycling Tours have been operating since 2001 and are owned, operated and run by Clare Holdsworth. Based in Melbourne, Australia, Clare has extensive cycling and travel experience in Europe and Australia, has detailed knowledge of the best cycling routes as well as the cultures, traditions, food and wine of the regions they pass through.
Our rides are point to point (we don’t believe in spending valuable holiday time in buses), we cycle around 80km a day, attract a mix of abilities, ages and genders. The common factor is a love of challenging but sociable cycling with a good meal and glass of wine (or two!). Many of our customers become lifelong friends and return in following years.

An 8-night loop from the Gold Coast through the Tweed Valley hinterland to Byron Bay, taking in cane fields, mountain climbs, foodie towns and surf beaches.
Gold Coast to Byron & Beyond is a loop tour starting and finishing at Coolangatta, riding quiet rolling country roads through sugar cane fields, sub-tropical forest and a handful of genuinely tough mountain climbs. The route passes beneath Mt Warning, through the hippie township of Nimbin, and along the surf coast around Byron Bay and Brunswick Heads.
Northern NSW is treated as much as a food destination as a cycling one, with the tour built around farmers markets, hatted restaurants and regional produce, including a stop at 3 Blue Ducks and several multi-course group dinners.
This is a small-group tour rated moderate to advanced, aimed at experienced riders comfortable with consecutive 80 km, 1000 m - climbing days, though two shorter loop days can be taken as rest days instead.
Highlights:
- Ride through sugar cane fields, farmland and sub-tropical forest beneath Mt Warning, visiting the hippie township of Nimbin
- Three multi-course group dinners and a standout group lunch at top regional restaurants showcasing local produce
- A paddock-to-plate breakfast at 3 Blue Ducks
- Two nights each in Byron Bay and Brunswick Heads, with surf beaches and laid-back coastal vibes
- Morning tea at the Mullumbimby farmers market
- A mix of mountainous, rolling and coastal terrain across the Tweed hinterland and coast
Surface and terrain:
Described as "lots of undulating hilly riding" with a mix of mountainous, rolling hills and some flatter, easier coastal sections. Average daily riding includes around 1000 m of climbing, with two shorter loop days offering an easier or rest-day option. The tour is positioned for road bikes or e-bikes rather than gravel/off-road riding.
Weather:
Northern NSW and the Gold Coast hinterland have a sub-tropical climate, generally warm and humid with a wetter summer season.
Suitable for:
Experienced cyclists able to manage around 80 km and 1000 m of climbing on consecutive days over rolling to hilly terrain. Rated moderate to advanced.
