The Triglav National Park (TNP) covers an area of 838 km2 extending along the Slovenian border with Italy and Austria and covering 4 percent of Slovenia's territory. The park almost entirely covers the eastern Julian Alps terrain. It is the largest protected area in the country and one of the oldest of European parks.
Most mountains in the group of 400 Slovenian peaks rising above 2000 metres are found in the Triglav National Park. This dynamic mountain karst terrain features picturesque mountain peaks and valleys as well as numerous natural and cultural attractions. As much as two thirds of its area are covered by forest. The relief is very dynamic, ranging from sharp peaks and steep rock faces to deep glacial valleys. A major feature of the park is the largest glacial lake in Slovenia – Lake Bohinj. This is where the tour starts after the group gathers at the capital of Slovenia, Ljubljana.
The route leads to the heart of the national park, the Pokljuka plateau, which overlooks both lakes the tour visits – Bohinj and its more famous counterpart, Lake Bled. Through the serene alpine valley of Radovna, the route leads to the alpine village of Kranjska gora and over one of the most beautiful mountain passes, Vroč, finally descending to the Trenta valley and further to the valley of River Soča with a first stop in the town of Bovec.
Flowing under the majestic peaks of the Julian Alps with the distinct emerald green colour of water, the Soča is considered one of the most beautiful European rivers, and the tour makes the most of it. On the way to Tolmin, the largest town in the valley, the tour passes three majestic waterfalls of three completely distinctive characters. Later, it stops at a charming village of Drežnica under Mt Krn and the town of Kobarid, which attained recognition during World War I (Battle of Caporetto) and is featured in the famous novel A Farewell to Arms by the then American war correspondent Ernest Hemingway.
Near Tolmin, one can find the Tolmin Gorges, the lowest entry point to the Triglav National Park. However, the group continues to Most na Soči located on a rocky crest above the confluence of the two rivers of Soča and Idrijca. Here, the group embarks on a train to Bohinj and Ljubljana, which runs on the most beautiful railway in Slovenia and the wider area. The Bohinj Railway has been placed on the tentative UNESCO World Heritage List.
