The Mekong Delta was formed primarily by mud from the Mekong River spreading in forklike directions out to the East Sea. The area itself was sparsely populated until the 19th century, when Vietnamese settlers moved slowly to the down South to take advantage of the newly formed region's rich agricultural potential. They call the area 'Mien Tay' or ' West'. Most of the area's geographical, cutural and architectural attractions are, such as temples that may appear to be hundreds of years old may in fact have been built as recently as the 1930s and 1940s. The oldest area of Mekong Delta is Ha Tien, on the South-western coast at the border of present-day Combodia. Ha Tien was settled and hightly prosperous sa early as the start of the 17th century. The estuary of the Mekong Delta, extremely marshy, dominates the lower quarter of the country. The area is low and flat and ferfect for cultivation of rice in this rich soil, crops grown in the Delta include mango, mangosteen, jack-fruit, orange, and durian among others, this region is also famous for shrimp, cat- fish,....
