Visit the Roman Ruins of Conimbriga in self-guide mode
On this bike tour we invite participants to reach the Roman Ruins of Conímbriga in an environmentally friendly and, above all, healthy means of transport.
After collecting the bikes from the agreed location, we suggest following the clearly marked routes of the Carmelite Route (Caminhos de Fátima, follow the blue arrows) to the Ruins and on the way back the route of the Central Portuguese Way (Caminhos de Santiago, follow the yellow arrows). It is approximately 17 km there and 17 km back, with a total positive elevation gain of 700D+.
A National Monument since 1910, Conímbriga is the most notable archaeological site from the Roman era in Portugal and also the most visited.
It originated in a Celtic hill fort of the Conii tribe, at the end of the Iron Age and conquered by the Romans in 139 BC.
Between 465 and 468, the Suevi took and partially sacked the city, accentuating the decline of urban life, which continued until the definitive abandonment of the site, in the middle of the Medieval period.
The Conímbriga Monographic Museum was founded in 1962 and its mission is to manage the ruins of the Roman city, promote their public exhibition and continue archaeological research on the site. The permanent exhibition displays only objects from the Conímbriga excavation.
Tickets for the visit to the Ruins and the Museum are included in the tour.
Even in self-guide mode, we provide assistance with any questions or mechanical details.
