Ride the southwest Alentejo and Costa Vicentina by gravel bike

Cycling by gravel bike through the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentina Coast Natural Park is a journey through one of Portugal's most unspoiled and protected regions. Over 8 days you ride from the fishing town of Sesimbra to Vila Nova de Milfontes, where the Atlantic carves dramatic cliffs, hidden beaches and quiet coves.

Following secondary roads and scenic gravel paths, the route crosses Arrábida Natural Park, takes the ferry over the Sado River where dolphins live, and connects wetlands, coastal lagoons and traditional fishing villages such as Porto Covo. It finishes with one of Portugal's most spectacular clifftop rides.

Between stages, enjoy uncrowded beaches for a swim, fresh fish and seafood, gourmet picnics, and the regional wines and local produce that define the Alentejo coast. Choose from self-guided, van-supported or fully guided versions.

Highlights

  • Gravel paths and quiet roads through Arrábida Natural Park
  • Sado River ferry crossing to the Tróia Peninsula, home to wild dolphins
  • Santo André and Melides lagoons and the Marble Book Monument
  • Santiago do Cacém castle and a family olive mill
  • Fishing coves of Porto Covo and Vila Nova de Milfontes
  • Clifftop gravel ride along the Vicentina coast to Almograve Beach

Surface and terrain
A mix of quiet secondary roads and scenic gravel paths and dirt roads, mostly flat along the coast. Day 2 through Arrábida is hilly with four longer climbs (890 m), and day 4 ends with a climb into Santiago do Cacém. Asphalt alternatives are available.

Weather
Mild Atlantic climate, with sea breezes keeping coastal summers warm rather than hot. Spring and autumn are ideal for riding, and the sea is warm enough to swim from June to October. Winters are mild and wetter.

Suitable for
Leisure riders comfortable on gravel and dirt roads, with 30 to 60 km days and one hilly stage. Suits couples and small groups who enjoy beaches, seafood and nature. Five service levels cater for a range of preferences.
