A peek into the Iberian Peninsula, with four border crossings and no border control

This 8-day inn-to-inn tour explores the quiet borderlands of the northern Alentejo, crossing into Spain and back four times with zero border hassle. It is designed for fit riders, with long days on narrow, off-the-beaten-track roads, and an e-bike is recommended for anyone less fit.

The journey starts in the hilltop village of Marvão and its dramatic castle, then rolls through the Serra de São Mamede Natural Park to medieval Castelo de Vide, the Roman city of Ammaia and the fortified UNESCO city of Elvas. Following the Guadiana River, it crosses into Spain to Olivenza before finishing in the riverside fortress village of Juromenha.

Along the way, meet the warm Alentejo people, enjoy gourmet picnics and Mediterranean-style food, and discover local cork, marble, olive oil, craft beer and wine. Most nights are in charming, locally owned small hotels, making this one of the operator's most sustainable tours.

Highlights

  • Hilltop village and castle of Marvão, with a night in its pousada
  • Serra de São Mamede Natural Park and medieval Castelo de Vide
  • Roman city of Ammaia and the hilltop village of Alegrete
  • UNESCO-listed fortress city of Elvas, its aqueduct and forts
  • Four border crossings into Spain, including Olivenza and an optional visit to Badajoz
  • Guadiana River, Juromenha fortress and the marble village of Terena

Surface and terrain
Narrow secondary asphalt roads, undulating with frequent climbs, plus some dirt roads near the Guadiana. Daily ascent is 220 to 750 m, with most days rated Hard. The Marvão to Castelo de Vide day is the toughest.

Weather
The northern Alentejo is hot and dry in July and August, and the Serra de São Mamede can be cooler and wetter. Spring and autumn are ideal for long days in the saddle, and winters are cool with some rain. (General guidance: no weather information on the page.)

Suitable for
Fit, experienced cyclists comfortable with 60 to 73 km days and repeated climbs. Less fit riders must take an e-bike. Suits travellers seeking quiet roads, history and authentic local culture.
