A two-wheeled journey through Vietnam, Laos and China in search of the legendary Tibetan Kingdom
Shangri-La, an earthly paradise cut off from the world in a hidden Himalayan valley, a place where there is no war or suffering and where people live in peace and harmony through meditation and self-discipline, has excited people’s imaginations ever since James Hilton’s novel, Lost Horizon, was printed in 1933. However, the idea of a lost kingdom in the Himalayas can be traced back more than 4 centuries to the court of the Moghul emperor, Akbar. Now we will embark on our own cycling quest for this fabled utopia.
The journey begins in the bustling Vietnamese city of Saigon and continues up the country’s stunning coastline past the beach town of Nha Trang, the ancient trading port of Hoi An and the old Imperial capital of Hue. Turning inland the riders cross into Laos and spin along the Mekong River before heading through the mountains to the golden temples in Luang Prabang. The route heads back into Vietnam before leading into China, spinning past spectacular rice paddies on the way to the finish line in Shangri-La.
