This first section of Africa: Ocean to Ocean begins in Luanda.

After exploring the city’s waterfront Marginal promenade and lively markets like Roque Santeiro, the riders will pedal through Parque Nacional do Quicama, home to over 200 bird species and a beautiful baobab forest. The route continues south along the coast with stops in Caboledo for surfing and Lobito for gorgeous Portuguese colonial architecture and local crafts like wood carving, pottery and woven baskets. The rider briefly dip into the arid plains and rocky outcrops of the Namib Desert before climbing up the incredible switch back of the Serra da Leba Pass.

The route now crosses into Namibia where challenging dirt roads follow the Kunene River to the impressive Epupa Falls. The desert cycling continues south through the remote Kaokoveld region before turning east towards Etosha National Park where the riders will enjoy an included game drive and a rest day in one of Africa’s premier wildlife viewing spots, watching for the endangered and elusive black rhino. The cyclists now cross into Botswana and continue south along the edges of the vast, untamed Okavango Delta, an important source of water for the region’s wildlife, eventually pulling into Maun, and the end of this incredible section.
