This exciting section of the Trans-Oceania crosses Tasmania from north to south
Tasmania, originally known as Van Dieman’s Land, this island is not only famous for the ferocious Tasmanian devil and the enigmatic Tasmanian tiger but for its natural beauty - pristine beaches, majestic mountains, peaceful valleys and quaint country roads.
Beginning in the university town of Launceston, the route takes riders along the scenic northern coast before heading east through some challenging climbs. Arriving in the fishing village of St Helens, the cyclists have a chance to explore the famous Bay of Fires – a string of white sand beaches broken up by rocky headlands and murky lagoons. The road now heads south along the coast, past cosy, inviting wineries to Swansea, with its sweeping views of mountain peaks across Great Oyster Bay. A final day’s ride brings the riders to Hobart, the island’s cosmopolitan capital city.
After a rest day exploring Hobart’s extensive charms, the riders will spin out towards Tasmania’s spectacular west coast. There, cyclists will weave through alpine lakes and misty mountains. The road continues through the wilderness before dipping down to the small coastal town of Strahan. The next day’s route is gorgeous, taking the cyclists through seemingly endless rainforests before climbing back up into the mountains. On the last day the riders will visit the Tasman Arboretum on their way in to Devonport, and the end of this section.
