A Cycling Journey Through the Aztec & Mayan Kingdoms
The Jaguar. This majestic creature was considered sacred by both the Mayan and Aztec civilizations. Worshiped as a symbol of strength and power, the Jaguar was also seen as a spirit animal who could move between worlds. The Path of the Jaguar will lead cyclists through the regions of past Mayan and Aztec cultures, from the verdant rainforests of Costa Rica to the golden beaches of El Salvador, from the smoking volcanoes of Guatemala to the mountains of Chiapas, Mexico.
Starting in San Jose, Costa Rica in the shadow of Volcan Poas, the route takes the riders up into the misty cloud forest in Monteverde before heading north into Nicaragua and on to Honduras, the beaches of El Salvador, and a rest day in the historic city of Antigua, Guatemala. The riders continue to gorgeous Lake Atitlan and head past smoking volcanoes in Guatemala’s highlands. Crossing into the Mexican state of Chiapas, the cyclists will experience the area’s distinctive culture before spinning towards Mexico City, previously known as Tenochtitlan, the ancient capital of Aztecs.
