This challenging section of the Golden Buddha Ride begins with the riders spinning out of sleepy Vientiane past amazing fruit stands and coconut farms.
The road follows the Nam Song River into picturesque Vang Vieng which riders can enjoy a refreshing Radler and authentic German food at the Thai Deutsches Restaurant. The next 2 days include some serious climbing including a 1500m climb over 10 km with 12% grades. Riders are rewarded for their effort with some incredible views of the karst mountains and a nice downhill into a rest day in Luang Prabang. Situated at the confluence of the Nam Khan and Mekong Rivers, the town exudes a timeless atmosphere. Each morning monks wander the shaded streets in search of alms before returning to one of the town’s 33 sacred temples.
The route continues into the country’s mountainous north, passing through small villages before turning south and heading through the isolated Nam Ha National Bio-Diversity Conservation Area, known for its incredible bird watching. This region is also known for its diverse hill tribes including the H’mong, Mien, Karen and Akha. The riders pedal south and, at the sleepy river town of Huay Xai, cross the Mekong River into Thailand. From here the route meanders along quiet back roads and through forested mountains to Chang Rai, home to the famous White Temple. A few more days of riding brings the cyclists to the end of this section in Chang Mai, known for stunning Buddhist temples and delicious local cuisine.
