This section of the Road of Empires begins in the shadow of Seville’s awe-inspiring Gothic Cathedral, the largest in the world.
The cyclists then head out through the Andalucian countryside on quiet rural roads, many lined with colourful orange trees. They stop in Cordoba to gaze in awe at the city’s Mezquita Mosque, one of the most beautiful Islamic buildings ever constructed, before continuing their journey to Granada and its famous Moorish castle, the Alhambra. The route then descends to palm-lined streets of the Spanish port of Almeria.
After a ferry ride across the Mediterranean Sea, the cyclists will begin their journey across Algeria, one of the least visited countries in the world. The route is challenging, taking the cyclists up and down, past the towering Atlas Mountains and along the azure coastal waters. The Roman ruins at Tipaza are a stirring reminder of the area’s historic past, perched above the water amongst ancient olive trees. The last day of the section brings the cyclists into the country’s capital Algiers and its famous Casbah, marking the end of this extraordinary ride.
