This ultimate section of The Road to Shangri-La starts in the Chinese city of Kunming.

The route heads west through rolling hills to Dali, once a prized destination for many generations of backpackers. A rest day here will allow the cyclists to enjoy the town’s beautiful location, perched at the foot of the mountains on the shores of Erhai Lake. The riders, climbing ever so steadily, now head north through the tiny village of Shaxi, once a major stop on the ancient Tea Horse Road, and on to Lijiang, where they can explore the city’s fabled Old Town.

The next few days of cycling take the riders through the legendary Tiger Leaping Gorge, which at 16 km long and 3900 m deep, is one of the deepest in the world. The route continues through stunning scenery before stopping in the village of Bai Shui Tai, famous for its limestone terraces and as the birthplace of the Dongba religion of the local Naxi people. The last day’s ride is something special, taking the cyclists up 2400 m, out of the valley and into the Tibetan atmosphere of Shangri-La, marking the end of this spectacular section.
