Final stage of the Tour d’Afrique Cape to Kili
From Lilongwe we cruise downhill towards Lake Malawi. Africa’s third largest lake, home to many breeds of aquarium fish. Don’t be surprised to find yourself pedaling alongside some of Malawi’s many cycling farmers, as they transport chickens, grain, and just about anything between their villages and the nearest market.
Riders soon climb into Tanzania and follow the paved and red dirt roads cut through lush green forest through the middle of the country. The cyclists begin several challenging days of ascents and descents – sometimes on rougher gravel and sandy roads as they approach Babati. Heading north from Babati, the red-cloaked Masai tribesmen will be a constant companion as cyclists spin along roads with relatively little traffic, surrounding by endless green hills and red earth.
A rest day at Lake Manyara will give plenty of opportunity for spectacular wildlife viewing. From there the final days are a new route, never before used on our Tour d’Afrique. As the section nears its end, the cyclists will spot the unmistakable Mount Kilimanjaro.
