Second section of the Road of Empires
This section begins in Algiers and the road heads inland climbing and descending through the Tell Atlas Mountains, leading the riders to the incredible Roman Ruins at Djemla. It continues to Algeria’s cultural capital, Constantine, also known as the ‘City of Bridges,’ before descending back to the coast at Annaba. A rest day here allows the cyclists to explore the old Roman City of Hippo Regius and enjoy the local sunny beaches. Refreshed, they now head back up into the mountains to the Tunisian border before cruising downhill into Tunis, the country’s capital.
In Tunis, the riders park their bikes for a few days to explore the Sahara Desert, camp under the stars and explore dunes, desert oasis and Bedouin culture. The route now moves into Sicily, beginning in the classical city of Palermo, a gastronomical and cultural gem. The cyclists head south across the island to the Greek ruins at the Valley of the Temples before heading back into the island’s mountainous interior. Finally, the cyclists arrive in Syracuse, once one of the greatest cities of the ancient Greeks, and the end of this amazing section.
