From Table Mountain to the Roof of Africa
With iconic Table Mountain as the backdrop, the cyclists will head north with Mount Kilimanjaro – known as the Roof of Africa – as their destination. From Cape Town they will ride towards the Cederberg Mountains known for their exceptional botanical diversity which at this time of the year is laden with the scent of orange blossom. From there they will continue onward across the Senqu River into Namibia. This sparsely populated country is full of wide-open spaces and night skies bursting with stars as you have never seen before. After a stop at one of the world’s largest sand dunes at Sossusvlei, the riders will continue northeast through the Namib Desert past quiver trees and grazing impala – reaching Windhoek, Namibia’s modern capital, a few days later.
From there they head across the border into the vast expanse of Botswana, riding along the edges of the Kalahari Desert reaching Maun, the gateway to the renowned Okavango Delta and an opportunity to take a one-day safari or a flight over the delta. Continuing, elephant sightings are common as are the unmistakable baobab trees. In Kasane, there is a chance to take the Chobe River safari to see even more wildlife. It is on to the mighty Victoria Falls just over the border in Zimbabwe for some rest and off-bike adventures. A couple days cycling brings them to Lake Kariba where a ferry will take them across the waters to Zambia’s capital city, Lusaka. The route continues to the Luangwa River before crossing into Malawi and its capital Lilongwe.
From Lilongwe the riders turn north and ride alongside Lake Malawi before climbing into Tanzania. Cyclists are challenged by the terrain through central Tanzania but are rewarded with lush green forests and red dirt roads. Now into the final few days, riders on this tour will inaugurate a new route on the Tour d’Afrique to Lake Manyara and eventually to Moshi. This mid-size town sits below the towering Mount Kilimanjaro where we conclude our grand voyage of east and southern Africa.
