Section 1 of Path of the Jaguar begins in San Jose, Costa Rica’s capital
The riders will head west to the Gulf of Nicoya and then up into the cloud forest in Monteverde for a rest day, where they can walk through the misty treetops looking for the elusive, but beautiful, Quetzal. The route continues through the country’s rolling green hills and across the Nicaraguan border to the stunning beach in San Juan del Sur. The riders will then enjoy a rest day experiencing Granada’s colonial architecture on the shores of Lake Nicaragua and a nighttime visit to fiery Volcan Masaya.
The route continues past Nicaragua’s cultural capital, Leon, to the Pacific Ocean. Here the riders will load their bicycles onto a boat for a transfer to El Tigre Island where a rest day will allow them to simply lie back and enjoy the island’s sleepy atmosphere and ocean views. Another boat ride returns the riders to the mainland in El Salvador. A few days of cycling past farmers’ fields leads them to a rest day on the gorgeous beach in El Tunco. The route continues into Guatemala and the section finishes on the scenic cobblestone streets of Antigua.
