The 2nd section of the Path of the Jaguar begins in the charming, historic city of Antigua, home to some lovely colonial architecture.
The route takes the riders to beautiful Lake Atitlan before climbing up into the Guatemalan mountains, past small indigenous communities and into the Mexican state of Chiapas. A rest day in San Cristóbal de las Casas will allow the riders to get a taste of the region’s unique cultural and political identity. The cyclists now spin down out of the mountains to a rest day in Tehuantepec, the centre of the local Zapotec culture.
The route heads back up into the central Mexican mountains, offering up sweeping views over cactus filled hillsides. A double rest day in Oaxaca gives the cyclists the opportunity to take in the city’s spectacular street art and to sample its signature dish, classic mole. The riders continue north through the hills, stopping in friendly small rural towns, eventually arriving in Cholula, home to the Great Pyramid, the largest by volume in the world. The last 2 days take the cyclists past Volcan Popocatépetl and on to Mexico City and the end of this incredible section.
