Section 2 of the Road of Moorish Kings, Tangier to Palma de Mallorca.
This Spanish section begins in the port city of Tangier, located strategically at the meeting point of Europe and Africa, and of the Atlantic and Mediterranean. A quick ferry ride carries riders across the water to mainland Spain, where they head inland, gradually climbing to the historic city of Ronda and its striking El Tajo Gorge. The route then crosses a region of rolling hills and small villages to Granada, where riders enjoy a rest day exploring the incomparable Alhambra Fortress, one of the world's most famous examples of Islamic architecture.
From Granada, riders spin northwest through the Spanish countryside to a second rest day in Caravaca de la Cruz, joining the many religious pilgrims who make the journey to the sacred Basilica-Sanctuary of La Vera Cruz. The route then heads to the Mediterranean and the seaside town of Calp, known for its rock-cut sea pools and excellent birdwatching, before following the coast to the sunny city of Valencia, home of the classic Spanish dish paella.
In Valencia, riders board an overnight ferry to Mallorca, one of the world's great cycling destinations, for a four-day ride around the island that marks the end of this inspiring section, and of the full Road of Moorish Kings journey for those riding both sections back to back.
