Nepal Heritage by Bicycle

When you think of cycling in Nepal, extreme mountain biking on the rugged slopes of the Himalayas probably comes to mind. While there's no shortage of that, this tour invites riders to explore a wider range of Nepal's landscapes and cultures, all while keeping the cycling pace and terrain at a moderate level. From the temperate highlands around Kathmandu to the lush, subtropical plains of the Terai region, and from the sacred birthplace of Lord Buddha at Lumbini to the mountain lakes of Pokhara, this 10-day bike tour takes riders deep into the heart of Nepal's rich heritage.

Meeting in Kathmandu, the first stage heads south through the Himalayan foothills, passing pine forests, Nepali villages and terraced agricultural fields, with views of snow-capped peaks, a hike to a Hindu temple, and a winding descent to the Terai Plains. Following the rice-field-covered banks of the braided Rapti River, the route reaches the edge of Chitwan National Park, renowned for its subtropical jungles, with a canoe ride offering a chance to spot rhinos and crocodiles. The tour then drives west to explore the Sacred Garden of Lumbini, the cradle of Buddhism.

The final stage returns to the foothills, with a night in Tansen before riding along wild gorges to the lakeside city of Pokhara, gateway to the Annapurna Range. On the last day, riders hike and bike around picturesque Begnas Lake before the tour ends in Pokhara, with the option to continue trekking or return to Kathmandu by flight.

Surface and terrain:
Mix of paved roads, gravel paths, village lanes and vehicle-width dirt roads. Foothill days (2, 3, 8, 9) are undulating with mild climbs and a few steep sections, plus long descents (up to 2,700m elevation loss); Terai plains days are flatter. Average climbing is 512m/day.

Weather:
Dry season October–May, monsoon June–September (80% of annual rain). Best seasons are March–May and September–November. Kathmandu Valley ranges 19–27°C in summer, 2–20°C in winter; mornings and descents can be chilly.

Suitable for:
Rated "Moderate" difficulty. Suited to riders with reasonable fitness comfortable on uneven surfaces for extended periods; stamina needed for sustained climbs and good handling for descents. A leisurely pace with plenty of stops welcomes less experienced riders too. Group size 2–16, minimum age 18.
