A 10-day road cycling circumnavigation of tropical Hainan Island, southern China, from Haikou past beaches, volcanic coastlines and hot springs.
Known to the Chinese as an exotic and mysterious territory for over two millennia, Hainan Island has evolved into a vibrant cycling destination, rich in natural treasures and cultural interest. Once a site of exile from mainland dynasties and a hinterland explored by wandering Buddhist monks, today's Hainan is a prosperous tropical jewel, home to ecological sanctuaries protecting its jungle and marine beauty, framed by seaside resorts that make ideal waypoints for a circumnavigation by bike.
The tour begins near Haikou with introductions and a bike fitting, before riders set out along the northern coast past waterfalls and traditional villages. The daily rhythm allows time to take in the sights as well as ride, with an early night spent soaking in natural hot springs. Day 3 reaches Yangpu Bay for a sense of the island's port commerce, riding among sites from Hainan's turbulent 20th-century history and ancient salt flats, before continuing to the beach paradises of the south and the sleek city of Sanya.
Along the east coast, riders pass through coconut forests, coral reef rehabilitation sites and ancient aquaculture ports, with historic mansions and a modern space launch site adding contrast to the natural scenery. The final day brings riders to the serene nature reserve of Tongguling Peak and the windswept, lesser-travelled Mulan Bay, a fitting conclusion before returning to Haikou for a final celebratory dinner.
Highlights:
- Cycle the full circumference of Hainan Island, from volcanic coastlines to tropical beaches
- Soak in natural hot springs and visit the historic Lin'gao Cape lighthouse
- Ride past centuries-old salt fields, aquaculture towns and the Dongjiao Coconut Forest
- Explore modern Sanya and spot rare wildlife including Chinese white dolphins
- Visit the 1930s Cai Family Mansion and China's Longlou space launch site
- Finish at Tongguling Peak nature reserve and the windswept beauty of Mulan Bay
Surface and terrain:
Well-paved roads and bike paths, with brief rougher asphalt or gravel sections. Terrain is consistently rolling rather than featuring sustained climbs, averaging 586 m of climbing per day. Some traffic-sharing through towns; four days use short van transfers (30–60 minutes) to bypass busier urban roads.
Likely weather:
Tropical and warm year-round, with average daily highs around 26°C, rarely below 18°C even in winter. Hot season (May–October) sees highs of 28–33°C, cooler months (November–April) range 20–26°C. Rainy season is May–October, heaviest in June–August. Humidity is high year-round.
Suitable for:
Rated "Fondo" difficulty. Suited to road cyclists with reasonable experience and good fitness comfortable with consistent daily distances around 105 km. Heat and humidity acclimatisation is recommended given the tropical conditions.
