Coastal Japan: San-In Explorer

San-in is one of Japan's least populated and least urbanised regions, making it an alluring setting for an off-the-beaten-track cycling adventure in the Land of the Rising Sun. This tour traverses San-in's diverse geography of rugged shorelines, dramatic volcanic landscapes, colourful forests and expansive farmlands, encountering quaint fishing villages, bustling maritime towns, timeless shrines and temples, and grand Samurai castles along the way, soothing tired muscles in hot springs each evening.

Meeting in Tottori City, the tour begins with an easy warm-up ride to Japan's largest and most visually striking sand dunes. The following day riders cycle inland via lakes, rivers, rice paddies and rolling hills to reach a renowned onsen (hot spring) town, then descend back towards the coastline and ride along the slopes of Mount Daisen, an extinct volcano towering over the region.

On Day 4, the tour catches a ferry to the Oki Islands for island riding and island hopping across all four inhabited islands of this remote volcanic archipelago. Back on the mainland, the route follows scenic headlands to the historic city of Matsue, home base for two nights, exploring the majestic "Black Castle" and a rural loop to one of Japan's prettiest zen gardens at the Adachi Museum of Art.

The tour concludes with a picturesque ride skirting a lake and two rivers before arriving at Izumo Taisha, one of Japan's most important Shinto shrines, with a final night in the city of Izumo.

Surface and terrain:
Paved roads, mostly in good condition, with occasional broken asphalt, road debris or potholes. Terrain is consistently hilly with gradual and steep climbs most days. Average climbing is 677m/day, with two days exceeding 1,000m (max 1,250m). Minimal traffic given the region's low urbanisation.

Weather:
Four distinct seasons. Spring runs April–June; rainy season mid-June to mid-July; July–September can be hot and humid (up to 35°C in cities). Coastal riding brings possible strong winds and storms, especially in spring and autumn.

Suitable for:
Rated "Active" difficulty. Suited to riders comfortable with consistently hilly terrain and back-to-back riding days; distances vary from 23 to 73km. Less experienced riders are welcome but should prepare for the terrain. Group size 4–16, minimum age 18.
