Self-guided cycling tour from Passo di Resia in South Tyrol down through the Adige Valley to the shores of Lake Garda.
This self-guided tour descends from Passo Resia (1,455m) through South Tyrol and Trentino to the sub-Mediterranean shores of Lake Garda, riding almost entirely on protected, paved cycle paths. From Silandro, a transfer and bike adjustment sets riders up for a mostly downhill run past Lake Resia, fortified Glorenza and apple orchards along the River Adige.
The route continues through Venosta Valley's pine woods to historic Merano, once Princess Sissi's spa retreat, then on past apple orchards and vineyards to Bolzano and lakeside Caldaro. From there the Strada del Vino wine route leads into the Adige Valley towards Trento's Old Quarter, before a final ride along the river and a gentle ascent to sweeping views over Lake Garda, finishing in Riva del Garda.
An optional extra day loops into the Valley of the Lakes near Arco, with its medieval castle and crystal-clear Lago di Cavedine.
Highlights:
- Descend from Passo Resia (1,455m) through glacial valleys in South Tyrol, mostly on protected cycle paths
- Explore historic Merano, once a spa retreat for Princess Sissi
- Ride past vineyards and orchards to Bolzano, capital of South Tyrol, and along the Strada del Vino wine route
- Explore Trento's Piazza Duomo, Fonte Neptuno and Buonconsiglio Castle
- Finish at Lake Garda, with an optional loop through the Valley of the Lakes and hilltop castle of Arco
Surface and terrain: Paved and in good condition, nearly all on protected cycle paths. Predominantly downhill overall, with modest daily ascents of 150-350m. Total elevation gain across the 5 riding days is approximately 1,285m, offset by significantly more descent.
Suitable for:
Riders of most abilities, rated 2 of 5 on the operator's difficulty scale, given the largely downhill, paved route. Suitable for families with children aged 10 and up. E-bikes available.
