Explore the pearl of Indian Ocean on two wheels on this 14nights/ 15 days cycling tour. Ride along the beautiful back roads of the island for 12 days while visiting 6 UNESCO world heritage sites and two national parks. Enjoy the opportunity this trip provides you to get up close with local lives and experience the true Sri Lankan hospitality.
Cycling adventure begins from Negombo and head up north passing fishing communities along coastal back roads towards Chilaw. A night’s stay in Kalpitiya after the first day’s ride is a welcome one. Having ridden along quiet streets of Kalpitiya we turn inland towards the Ancient capital, Anuradhapura.
Next few days provide you the chance to ride along rural backroads of the cultural triangle passing reservoirs, rice and vegetable fields, irrigation canals and forest patches. Several UNESCO world heritage sites and some action in the wild awaits you for the next four days. Each day will be different with varied roads and places to cycle on as well as the sites you will visit, such as the Golden cave temple, Lion Rock and Minneriya National Park. Seeing the gathering of large herds of free roaming elephants will be a highlight.
Leaving the flatlands of the cultural triangle behind, the trip then takes you to the hill Capital, Kandy for a couple of nights stay. Climbing up the slopes of Kandyan hills you will get a chance to hear stories of Ceylon spice trade and visit a spice grove for a leisurely stroll. A visit to the Sacred Tooth Relic Temple during its puja ceremony will leave you with vivid memories. A free afternoon in Kandy provides opportunity for some shopping in the capital of arts and crafts of Sri Lanka.
Some good climbs awaits once you leave Kandy for the tea country. Riding through lush green tea carpeted hills enjoying the scent of freshly produced tea from the factories would be refreshing and tempting. You will spend a couple of nights at an old colonial tea plantation bung
alow here.
Then it is time to change the mode of transportation for a half day to get on board the upcountry train for one of the most scenic rail trips in the world. A long descent on bikes from Little England will bring you down to the little hill station of Elle, afterwards.
An early morning walk up to Elle rock helps to stretch different muscles and offers you some breathtaking panoramic views from the summit towards the eastern plains. You can enjoy another long descent from elle in the direction of the jungles of Yala.
Another chance to be up close with nature is on the cards with two safaris at Yala National park, the second largest and the most popular national park in the island. With a bit of luck, you might get treated with a sighting of the elusive leopard for which Yala is well known.
Riding along the southern back roads you will reach the fine beaches of Mirissa. There is Opportunity to join a whale watching tour, out in the sea looking for the Blue whales, sperm whales and dolphins while you are there.
Having completed the cycling adventure a leisurely walk in the historic Dutch for will allow you to experience the colonial legacy as well as to do some last minute shopping before heading towards Colombo.
