Danube Experience Iron Gates

Danube Experience Iron Gates is a 15-day cycling cruise through six countries. It follows the Danube from Passau in Bavaria to the dramatic gorges of the Iron Gates on the Serbian–Romanian border, then back again. Aboard the 4-star superior MV Lisabelle, riders visit four Danube capitals (Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest and Belgrade) and a wealth of landscapes, cultures and cuisines. The ship serves as a floating hotel, so there is no daily packing.

Riding mainly follows the EuroVelo 6 cycle path. Early stages cross the Schlögen Loop and follow the former Iron Curtain to Bratislava, then continue to Budapest and the artists' town of Szentendre. Further south, routes run along flood dykes through the Gemenc floodplain and the vast Pannonian Plain, past storks' nests, sunflower fields and the memorial to the 1526 Battle of Mohács. In Serbia and Croatia, riders visit the Petrovaradin fortress above Novi Sad and the wine town of Ilok. Kalocsa, Hungary's paprika capital, offers optional Puszta horse shows by the Csikós herdsmen. Rest days in Belgrade and Vienna, plus a full day cruising the Iron Gates canyons past the Decebalus rock sculpture, balance out the riding.

The return journey takes in the Danube Bend and Esztergom's basilica, Hungary's largest church, before a final stage through the UNESCO-listed Wachau to Melk Abbey. Full board is included, and riders can stay aboard on any day they prefer. Every departure runs either self-guided with app navigation or as a small-group guided tour.

Surface and terrain:
The route follows mostly sealed EuroVelo 6 paths over flat terrain in Austria, Slovakia and Hungary. Croatia and Serbia bring quiet country roads and partly unsealed paths. One stage is hilly. It is rated Level 1–2, and any stage can be skipped by staying on the boat.

Suitable for:
Casual riders with basic fitness who want short, mostly flat daily rides, a long multi-country cruise and plenty of sightseeing. It also suits mixed groups, since non-riders or tired legs can stay aboard.
