The Road to Vienna

The Road to Vienna cycle tour is aimed at any cyclist wanting to enjoy the delights of summer cycling, where it’s not too hot. Not too cold. Not too challenging. Not too easy! We will stay overnight in a range of fascinating towns and cities such as Tilburg, Koblenz, Mainz, Wurzburg, Nuremberg, Passau, and Linz, with time to explore at the end of every day. The journey starts in the Netherlands, and continues along the banks of the Rhine (following a section of the Eurovelo 15) and through the Upper Middle Rhine Valley (a UNESCO World Heritage Site). Near Mainz, we cycle cross-country to reach the River Danube, where we join Eurovelo 6. The cycle path follows the Danube downstream with easy riding on dedicated cycle paths, as it is for much of the route, all the way into Vienna. This tour is characterised by picturesque towns and villages, birdlife, lush forests, working boats and rivers in their full glory.

Highlights

• Beautiful cities: the route passes through wonderful cities such as Cologne, Frankfurt, Regensburg, and ends in Vienna.
• Rolling like a river: if you like rivers and you like bicycles then simply this is the trip for you!
• Cycle paths: large distances on dedicated cycle paths away from the traffic, including the final stretch down the Danube itself.
• Valleys: most notably the Wachau Valley (with its medieval castles and apricot orchards) and the Upper Middle Rhine valley’s outstanding culture landscapes, epitomising the Romantic era.
• Civilisation: some cycle tourists like to escape into the wilds, and others would really rather not! This is a good choice if you like not to be too far from civilisation and your creature comforts at any time!

Mostly flat with occasional hill. Mostly on cycle paths (expect gravel), roads near cities.
