Mountain Bike Kerala

Many people have asked us over the years if we could organize a cycle tour in India for those not from an off-road mountain biking background. The tour would have to be a challenge, take in the best of the sights and the scenery and allow time to soak up India’s delights.

For us at Mountain Bike Kerala one route sprung to mind that would provide all that and more; a cycle tour from the Bay of Bengal over the mighty mountains of the Western Ghats to the palm fringed beaches of the Arabian Sea. South India Coast to Coast.

Your cycle ride takes in the tropical South Indian states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala pedalling on idyllic back country roads, taking time to explore places of special historical and scenic interest on route with the region having a wealth of temples, tea plantations, backwaters, historic cities and some hidden gems on route that only we know.

We start in Mahabilapuram with its wealth of history and UNESCO listed stone carved monuments that provide a fascinating and stunning starting point for the challenge ahead. From here its cruisy riding to French colonial Pondicherry that feels a world apart from the rest of south India. We move inland to Chidambaram with its paddy and palm fringed temple complex which is home to one of the most extraordinary sunset ceremonies in India. Landscapes change as we make our way into the Tamil heartlands and the ancient cultures and monuments of Tamilian heritage and the other-worldly temples of Thanjavur and Madurai. From here we move into the rock strewn landscape of Thenni district with the mighty mountains of the Western Ghats making up the next few days riding as we ride into Kerala and the lush green landscapes of Munnar and Kuttikanam with a rest day to give us time to take it all in. From Kuttikanam we roll down through the spice mountains to the coast and the tropical paradise beach of Marwari which is our ride journeys end. Now its time to relax on the houseboat and explore historical Fort Cochin and take in its unique atmosphere.

If you’re a coffee lover this is also the home of the famed monsoon-Malabar which is a great way to start the day while waking up to the birdsong.

Our Kerala Backroads Spice Mountains to the Arabian Sea takes in the just about the best there is in the mountains and on the backwaters and coast, steady distances but enough for a  point to point cycling challenge with super scenery all the way.

Riding over some of the highest passes in the world this cycle journey takes us from the forested foothills of the Himalaya to the spectacular lunar landscapes of Ladakh. Our route weaves crosses the Indian Himalaya passing dramatic monasteries and the timeless beauty of a genuinely untouched land.

This is Himalayan riding at it’s zenith as we ride through the mountain  ranges of the Zanskar, Pir Panjal and the Himalaya itself cycling over some of the highest ridable passes in the world. Discover your inner mountain goat as you take on the challenge of the Khardungla, take tea and overnight at the legendary Zing Zing Bar. Marvel at the More Plains the high altitude desert like landscape cut through by glacial rivers. Refresh and recharge at the historic Leh, a place that feels like nothing else on earth set in a majestic landscape of Monastries and Palaces. It’s taken Mountain Bike Kerala 20 years to make this tour happen and it’s been well worth the wait.

We also know more than a little about the taste of  spices from cardamom to the famed Malabar pepper our guides will expand your mind while the spices will stimulate your senses.

Using the charming former British hill station of Darjeeling as our base we explore some of the most stunning mountain bike trails on the planet.  We take on outrageous climbs and massive 20Km plus singletrack descents with Yaks and the world’s third highest mountain Kangchenjunga as our constant companions.

 The trails zig-zag across the India and Nepal borders on sublime remote trails with knock out views of the highest mountains on earth including Everest. It’s adventure MTB all the way as we pass ancient monasteries, ride trails just opened up to mountain bikers and stay in some of the most remote villages in the world.
