Visit seventeen ancient cities on the route

EuroVelo 8 - Mediterranean Route is being extended to Türkiye, where it follows the coast of the beautiful Izmir Peninsula on a 500 km cycle route! It consists of an extension northwards of the Ephesus – Mimas Cycle Route, which traces the history of the settlements of the peninsula of İzmir, from the ancient Ionians to the Ottoman Empire. The route, while interconnecting ancient cities of vital cultural heritage, also allows the visitors to experience cultural, natural and local values.

The Izmir Eurovelo Route connects to the ports of Dikili and Cesme via Lesbos and Chios islands and passes through seventeen townships of the city. The route is structured with reference to the ancient sites and their interconnection based on natural, cultural and local values. Izmir EuroVelo Route connects two very important ancient cities. Pergamon in the north, and Ephesus in the South with other ancient sites on the route constituting its backbone.

The approved route extension connects the ports of Dikili and Cesme with the modern city of İzmir and picturesque small towns such as Eskifoça (“Old Foça”), a peaceful haven by the sea, and Alaçati, a traditional town noted for its colourful architecture. The route is structured according to the ancient sites and connects two very important ancient cities: Pergamon in the north, and Ephesus in the South. Following an itinerary that features kilometres of very scenic routes overviewing the sea, cycle tourists are invited to discover the Turkish gastronomy and hospitality. The small villages located along the route provide many opportunities to sit down and relax around a glass of strong black Turkish tea or a cup of unfiltered Turkish coffee and the evenings bring people together in restaurants overlooking the sea with a large choice of mezze and local fish!

There are two entry-exit points on the Izmir route, between Lesbos Island-Dikili Port and Chios Island-Çeşme Port.

You can visit seventeen ancient cities on the route, including Pergamon, Atarneus, Pitane, Elaia, Gryneion, Myrina, Kyme, Larissa, Smyrna, Agora, Limantepe, Erythral, Teos, Lebedos, Colophon, Claros and Ephesos.
