A 10-day ride from the slopes of Kilimanjaro to Zanzibar's spice island, crossing Chagga, Swahili and Usambara country.

This ride starts at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro and crosses North-Eastern Tanzania to the Indian Ocean, finishing on Zanzibar. Riders pass through Chagga villages near Marangu, climb into the Usambara Mountains via Mambo and Lushoto, then descend to the coast at Pangani.

A boat transfer carries riders to Zanzibar, known as the Spice Island for its cloves, nutmeg and cinnamon. The tour finishes cycling into Stone Town, exploring its coral-stone buildings and former spice-trade alleyways before departure.

Throughout, the route blends cultural encounters (Chagga, Swahili and Usambara communities) with wildlife-spotting, waterfalls, coffee farms and beach time, supported by guides, a support vehicle and camping/lodge accommodation.

Highlights:

  • Ride from the slopes of Mt Kilimanjaro through Chagga and Usambara communities
  • Visit Chagga underground caves, a live museum and a local coffee farm near Marangu
  • Climb through the Usambara Mountains to Mambo View Point and Lushoto
  • Boat transfer to Zanzibar, the "Spice Island," finishing by bike in historic Stone Town
  • Relax at Lake Challa's crater lake and on Pangani's beaches along the way

Surface and terrain:
Mix of paved and off-road/dirt roads (page states "Off road & paved road"). Includes steep Usambara climbing, e.g. 1,400m gain over just 19km on Day 3; a long dirt-road stretch on Day 5.

Suitable for:
Fit, experienced riders comfortable with steep climbs and mixed surfaces. Activity level rated "Challenging." Minimum age 14. Offered as private or group tours.
